Here’s a fun little factoid about the Green Bay Packers as we kick off the regular season today. The Packers scored the fewest points — by far — of any team in the 2013 preseason with 37. The next closest was Pittsburgh with 56 (according to Bob McGinn).
Despite this anemic showing, the Packers’ cutdown castoffs were the most popular players picked up by the other 31 NFL teams. The Packers had five players, linebacker Dezman Moses (Kansas City), running back Alex Green (New York Jets), tight end D.J. Williams (Jacksonville), center Patrick Lewis (Cleveland) and linebacker Terrell Manning (San Diego) picked up immediately by other teams. In addition, quarterback Graham Harrell was picked up by the New York Jets and tight end Matthew Mulligan was picked up by the New England Patriots. Both were subsequently released before they had a chance to suit up.
Once again, the NFL preseason proves to be a poor barometer of a team’s fortunes and overall talent. The facts say the Packers enjoyed great depth across their personnel, despite how poorly they played in reaching their 1 – 3 record.
